At some point during your juicing practice, you’ll start feeling guilty about throwing away all the leftover pulp that your juicer is making. After all, produce is expensive, and the pulp still contains nutrients and is full of fiber. Luckily, there are numerous ways to put all that goodness to use!
1. Compost it.
If you do any gardening at all, then you probably know that composting is a natural way to add nutrients without depending on chemicals. If you find yourself with more pulp than you can use, don’t throw it out! Add it to your compost.
2. Bake with it.
Add fruit pulp to pancakes, cakes, muffins, and cupcakes as a tasty fiber booster.
3. Add it to smoothies.
The one disadvantage to juicing is that you aren’t getting the benefits of the fiber contained in the whole fruit or vegetable. An easy fix is to incorporate your leftover pulp into a smoothie.
4. Feed the worms.
Worms are an integral part of a healthy garden, so keep them healthy by feeding them your leftover pulp.
5. Add it to soup.
Vegetable pulp will add much-needed fiber and extra nutrients to store-bought or homemade soup. It also makes an excellent thickener if you find that your soup is turning out a little too thin.
6. Make a vegetable broth.
A homemade vegetable broth is as easy as adding water to your leftover vegetable pulp and simmering for at least 30 minutes. Season to taste and strain out the pulp if you prefer a clear broth.
7. Add to a bone broth for added fiber and vitamins.
Bone broth has become one of the most popular health-boosting foods in the past few years. But it’s not new. It’s been part of traditional diets throughout the world. Bone broth has a rich flavor, provides nutrients, and is easily digestible. Adding vegetable pulp to your bone broth will increase the number of vitamins in the broth and make it fiber-rich.
8. Make your own “superfood” powder.
A lot of people supplement their diets by adding powders made from dehydrated fruits and vegetables. These “superfood” powders can be added to juices, smoothies, and soups. One of the problems is that you often don’t know how these products are made. You can eliminate that concern by using a dehydrator to dry the pulp and then blending it into a powder. Now you know exactly what’s in your veggie or fruit powder.
9. Freeze it to make fruit pops.
Just freeze your favorite fruit pulp in popsicle molds for a healthy treat on a hot day.
10. Make a breakfast out of it.
Oatmeal and other hot cereals are an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, but they can be boring. Mixing in the pulp of apples and adding a pinch of cinnamon, elevates your plain cereal to a delicious treat. Try adding other fruits for even more variety. If you have eggs in the morning, then mix vegetable pulp into your scrambled eggs.
There are numerous other uses for your leftover pulp; use it as a filler in meatballs, meatloaf, and sausages, or mix it into hummus or other dips.
Juicing can be an incredible addition to your healthy lifestyle. By using a little creativity, you’ll find that everything part of your produce will be put to good use.
